A 61-year-old man was killed Thursday morning in a traffic crash that involved a Hernando sheriff's deputy.

The deputy suffered minor injuries.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 61-year-old man from Weeki Wachee was driving a 2011 Hyundai Sonata southbound on Fort Dade Avenue just after 5 a.m.

Troopers said the driver, James A. Arkell, failed to stop at a stop sign and pulled up onto State Road 50, also known as Cortez Boulevard. Arkell later died at an area hospital.

At that same time, Dep. Charles Woodbury, 45, was traveling westbound on SR 50. As the Hyundai moved onto the roadway, the cruiser struck the driver's side of the Hyundai.

Troopers said the Hyundai ended up about 50 yards from the cruiser.

The roadway was closed for several hours due to the crash, which remains under investigation.
