A Lakeland subdivision is getting a new street light following the death of a high school student earlier this month.

  • County approved street lights for intersection
  • 3 pedestrians killed in area, which also has several bus stops

Kalen Kirk, 17, was killed while crossing the road to get to his bus stop. He was the third pedestrian killed at the intersection of Clubhouse Road and Andros Boulevard since 2014.

In August 2014, the body of Jill Braddock was found next to Clubhouse Road, the apparent victim of a hit-and-run. In November 2014, Scott Sherman, 27, was hit by a Ford F-250 as he rode a skateboard on Clubhouse Road.

A crew from Lakeland Electric will install a new streetlight at the intersection Wednesday.

Installation of the streetlight was authorized by the Polk County Board of County Commissioners as part of a broader plan to address public safety concerns along Clubhouse Road. This action coincides with an ongoing traffic study of Clubhouse Road corridor from U.S. 98 west to Live Oak Road.
