There’s a new fear about non-native killer crocodiles in Florida, after researchers from the University of Florida published results from studies on the three Nile Crocodiles they've captured in South Florida over the past few years.

Alligator hunter Captain Phil Walters said it’s highly unlikely that these crocodiles will make it to the Bay area, but it is something to monitor.

"Being that it's most likely a more aggressive species, you have to exercise a much higher level of caution and self awareness," Walters said.

Researchers said the crocodiles were likely brought to Florida illegally. In their native land of Africa, these types of crocodiles are responsible for at least two hundred fatalities annually.

The team behind the published report also stated that there could be more Nile Crocodiles in the state of Florida, but they're not certain.

FWC officials stated this type of species and its presence in Florida is concerning -- but like Captain Walters, they believe it is unlikely they’ll reach the Bay area.
