There has been quite a bit of talk over the last two days, especially on social media, about a potential tropical system over the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.

One might think that a major hurricane was coming with all the hype that has been flowing aimlessly through the internet. Frankly, some national networks have jumped on the hype machine as well.

Before I get into it, let me say this….if we see this type of hype over THIS type of situation, it is going to be a very long, difficult hurricane season from a communicating the message standpoint.

OK, back to the weather forecast. There is a blob of moisture along an old front east of the Bahamas.

Some of the computer models consolidate the moisture into a broad, elongated weak area of low pressure. Most of the models that develop something, don’t even make it entirely tropical as an area of higher moisture moves into the Carolinas early next week.

Basically, higher rain chances will be found in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina on Sunday and Memorial Day. Some outdoor plans up there may be affected by some rain.

None of the models even close off a low pressure area stronger than 1008 milibars.

Is it possible that a tropical low could form? Sure, there is that possibility but again, I want to stress that it is uneccesary to see this type of hype.

It is May, there is a lot of dry air, quite a bit of wind shear and even a cold core upper level low still spinning over the east coast.

So, let’s have a little perspective here and go and enjoy the holiday weekend.
