  • Deputies: 1 dead, another seriously injured
  • Suspect was buying marijuana from the victim
  • Roommate heard argument, says he witnessed the murder

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says that Smith, 24, admitted to going to the victim's home, armed with a handgun, to purchase marijuana.

Reports have Smith arriving at Zayroone Toussaint's apartment, located at 5902 Trout River Dr., to buy 28 grams of marijuana around 2 p.m.

The agreed upon quantity was supposed to cost him $210.

According to deputies, after being at the apartment for several minutes, Smith started arguing with Toussaint, 25. Christopher M. Riley, another resident at the apartment, reportedly heard the heated conversation. He told deputies he emerged from his room with a handgun.

Deputies say it was then that Riley, 21, witnessed Smith standing over his roommate with a gun. Riley told investigators he saw him shoot Troussaint, who quickly fell to the ground. He later died from his injuries.

Riley and Smith exchanged several rounds of gun fire. Their confrontation spilled into the parking lot, where a witness told officers they saw Smith shoot Riley.

Riley is being treated at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the forehead, but he's expected to survive.

After his arrest, Smith was taken to the Hillsborough County Orient Road Jail.

No bond was granted.
