Bay area residents will get a chance to weigh in on the federal findings of Tampa's bike ticketing policy.

Just last month, a Department of Justice report found that Tampa's bike citation policy was not effective in reducing crime and it put a burden on lower-income African American communities.

Tampa's Police Chief Eric Ward told city council members Thursday that the department will eventually release the entire report online. There will also be community forums so residents can share their concerns.

"It's a concern to the community, so it's a concern to me," Ward said. "The only way that we can move forward is to be very transparent in this process. I think getting the community involved will accomplish that goal."

Chief Ward said they've already made some changes in the department's bike ticketing policy that have reduced the number of citations. There has also been more training of officers within the Tampa Police Department.

Chief Ward said more changes are on the way. A group has been appointed to look over the recommendations in the federal report. They'll come up with solutions to fight crime and work with the community.
