On the Purses and Love webpage, a Pinellas County domestic violence support organization, it talks about the speed at which victims often have to move when making an escape.

It’s something Dawn Fountain knows about all too well.

“She doesn’t have time to grab her purse, pack a bag, make the diaper bag, get the baby, get the food, the bottle.  You have a split second to get out,” Fountain said.

A domestic abuse survivor, Fountain is founder of the Purses and Love non-profit that, with her mother, Madelyn, and other volunteers, supplies domestic abuse victims and their children with basic items when they arrive at a shelter.

And she does not mince words.

“Sometime if you don’t get out, he’ll end up killing you,” Fountain said.

The non-profit’s name comes from purses that contain many basics along with other items, which include clothing and kids' toys.  And it all comes with love.

Fountain says domestic abuse comes in many forms:  physical, mental, and financial.

“He has control over all the finances.  You don’t even have a credit card.  If you want to go grocery shopping, you have to ask him, ‘Hey.  Can I have some money to go grocery shopping?’  And you better produce a receipt,” Fountain said.

Everyday Hero host Bill Murphy asked Fountain’s mother if it was knowledge of her daughter’s past abuse that helped her make her decision to get involved.

“No," said Madelyn. "What that did, what I learned about it simply made me angry, and anger doesn’t solve a problem.”

And while Fountain never meets those she helps, it’s enough for her to imagine what they might be feeling.

“You know what?  Cool.  One person gave a darn enough to do this little thing for me,” Fountain said.
