Two women are facing charges after deputies say they left a child in a hot vehicle while they shopped, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies received a 911 call Sunday about a child in the backseat of a Dodge Durango in the parking lot of a Sports Authority, located at 1417 Wendy Court, in Spring Hill.

The caller said all the windows and doors were closed and the engine was not running. He also said the child was in the vehicle for at least 10 minutes and he could not locate the parents.

The caller and another witness opened the rear door of the vehicle and removed the child, who was sweating profusely.

Hernando County Fire Rescue responded and evaluated the child, who was OK.

Based on surveillance video, deputies say the women were in the Sports Authority for 22 minutes and never checked on the victim.

Brandi and Shelley Steele were charged with child neglect. They told deputies they left the child in the car but only thought they were in the store for five minutes.
