The wait is over.

Scallop season is finally back and countless numbers of folks are heading off the coast of Hernando and Citrus to catch their limit.

It's a summer tradition enjoyed by people who come from near and far. Hitting the water in search of a delicious catch. The 2016 scallop season in now underway.

State wildlife officials say this year's count looks good so there should be plenty of scallops around. Monika Maciborek just moved to town and has never been scalloping.

“Im super excited,” she said. “I’m ready to go."

For a lot of businesses up and down the coast of Citrus and Hernando all the fun means it's time to cash in. Scallop season has a big economic impact and so far business owners we talked to are not disappointed.

Travis Burgdorf works at MacRae's in old Homosassa. He says the first few days of the season have been crazy.

“We ran out of ice,” he said. “We sell tons of flags, all sorts of stuff. Lot of beer."

The last day of the season is September 24.

The message from law enforcement is to have fun, but stay safe.
