  • Man raised handgun at deputies; deputies fired shots
  • Suspect struck numerous times; no deputies injured

Around 1:15 a.m., two deputies were called to a residence located at 9525 Grovedale Circle in Riverview to investigate a domestic dispute. When deputies arrived they interviewed a woman inside her apartment. She told police her boyfriend, Jamil Alejandro Valladares, had pulled her hair and ripped her robe.

A relative arrived and told deputies that Valladares, 26, was outside in the parking lot, the report stated.

The two deputies went outside to talk to Valladares. As deputies approached Valladares, they said he became verbally aggressive and pulled out a handgun. According to the report, the deputies, in fear for their lives, began firing. The suspect was struck numerous times.

"When the cops showed up, all I heard was people still yelling. I heard yelling and I guess they were trying to calm the situation down and that’s when there was a lot of firing, like sounds of gunshots,” neighbor Alexis Thompson said. "It was like pop pop pop pop pop and then it stopped for like two seconds then sounded all over again."

Multiple cars, including Valladares’ SUV, were damaged in the shooting.

"I walk out and start seeing cop cars,” neighbor Tyler Figueroa said. “I saw one, two, then kind of walked out and saw the whole line here and apparently my car has been shot at."

Figueroa’s Lexus was parked next to Valladares’s car.

“My front driver window is blown out, side passenger window as well,” Figueroa said.

According to the sheriff's office, the firearm used by Valladares was recovered next to him, and was a Smith & Wesson, SW40VE .40 caliber. Two spent .40 caliber shell casings were located near the handgun.

The two deputies were not injured in the shooting. Deputy Austin O'Neill, 26, and Deputy Joshua Berrios, 29, have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Valladares was booked at the hospital and will be transferred to the Hillsborough County Jail as soon as he is medically cleared. He is facing charges of two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. Additional charges are pending.
