A local athlete from Hernando County has something to brag about. Bobby Harris is trying out for the Olympics later this summer.

Harris does not mess around when it comes to the high jump. The 20 year old from Spring Hill is one of the top jumpers in the nation.

He holds the high jump record at Springstead High School and at the University of North Florida. He was also state champ, but now he has his eyes set on the Olympics.

“I spend hours and hours just jumping at a bar, running through, conditioning, lifting weights,” Harris said. “It's a lot of practice."

Bobby just found out he has been given a shot to try out for the Olympics later this summer in Brazil. The trials start soon and he is ready.

“Very exciting, very exciting for me,” Harris said.

Brandon Wright was Bobby's high school coach. He is beyond proud.

“If he can make it this year fantastic, but if not, it certainly is no small accomplishment, that's for sure,” Wright said.

The Olympic team trials for track and field are being held in Oregon. Bobby's first round of competition will be on July 8.
