The State Fire Marshal's office is trying to determine what caused Wednesday's massive fire at a Largo Walmart.

  • Largo Walmart fire under investigation
  • No word yet on what started Wednesday's fire, though witnesses reported flames from AC units
  • No injuries though three firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion

Officials may focus on the air conditioning units on the roof as the fire burned multiple units there. Witnesses said they saw flames shooting from the roof where the AC units are housed.

Still, officials have not confirmed what caused the fire.

The four alarm-fire brought more than two dozen units from surrounding cities to the store located 2677 Roosevelt Blvd., near U.S. Highway 19 and East Bay Drive.

The fire broke out around 12:50 p.m. Flames and smoke were seen pouring from the roof of the store, which opened in January in 2014.

Firefighters were able to knock the fire down in about 30 minutes.

No employees or shoppers were injured. Three firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.

Throughout Wednesday evening, crews brought in an airboat to use the fan to ventilate the huge building. Largo police officers spent the overnight hours outside the building as the doors were left open for ventilation.

The City of Largo's Building Department and Fire Rescue Department are working with Wal-Mart's local management team on restoration efforts.

Walmart officials have not said when the store may reopen.
