The Florida Department of Health is conducting an investigation into a possible non-travel-related case of Zika virus in Miami-Dade County.

  • Florida health officials collaborating with CDC on probe
  • Zika prevention kits available
  • Residents reminded to practice good draining methods

The department said Tuesday that it's conducting an epidemiological investigation and collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and will share additional details as they become available.

Zika prevention kits and repellant will be available for pickup at the Department of Health (Miami-Dade) and distributed in the area under investigation. Zika kits are intended for pregnant women.

Mosquito control has already conducted reduction and prevention activities in the area of the investigation.

Residents and visitors are reminded that the best way to protect themselves is to prevent mosquito bites through practicing good draining and covering methods.

Among the tips are emptying birdbaths and pet water bowls once or twice a week, using mosquito repellent on bare skin and clothing and repair broken screening on windows, doors, porches and patios.
