A Citrus County private library faces an uncertain future, as its annual funding in the county's budget is set to end soon.

  • Citrus Springs Library not part of the public library system
  • County officials say funds will be used to support other libraries

The Citrus Springs Library has been a big part of the community since 1986, but now it's future is unclear. Library president Jane Mazzacua is worried.

“Well of course,” Mazzacua said. “I couldn't be anything else."

The library is not part of the county's library system -- it is private -- but the county has been helping out with annual funding for years. According to the county's proposed budget, however, that funding will end in about a year.

Mazzacua is trying to stay positive.

“I still feel that there is a way somehow that we will survive,” Mazzacua said.

County officials say the $15,000 a year usually allocated to the Citrus Springs Library is needed to support other libraries in their system.

Mazzacua says without that money, the library will depend on donations and fundraising only, which amounts to roughly $3,000 - $4,000 a year.

Volunteer Frank Brosius is also trying to stay positive. He doesn't want the library to close.

“I think it will work out,” Brosius said.
