Two officers in Pinellas County have been cleared in a June 25 shooting, the state attorney's office said Friday.

  • Officers Copeland, Jasiukiewicz back on regular duty
  • Waldemar Bogusiewicz killed in incident
  • Police said suspect shot son, fired at officers

The incident happened in the 6000 block of 96th Terrace in Pinellas Park.

Police said Waldemar Bogusiewicz shot and killed his 25-year-old son and later began shooting at officers.

The officers -- Jeremy Copeland and Michael Jasiukiewicz -- returned gunfire at the man, who later died at Northside Hospital.

"As a result of the investigation conducted by my office I have determined Officer Copeland and Officer Jasiukiewicz were in the lawful performance of their legal duties when fired upon by Waldemar Bogusiewicz," said State Attorney Bernie McCabe.

"Waldemar Bogusiewicz actions constituted the forcible felony of attempted murder of a police officer," McCabe said. "When Waldemar Bogusiewicz pointed his gun at Officer Copeland, he was in fear for his life as was Officer Jasiukiewicz."

The officers were placed on administrative leave after the shooting but have returned to regular duty.

The case remains under investigation.
