The City of Lakeland is putting a new spin on spinning.

Soon, the city's Parks and Recreation Department will start offering aquatic spinning classes.

The department recently purchased eight aqua bikes. The bikes will be used for spinning classes as well as rehabilitation.

"It’s basically just like a normal spin class except you’re in the water," said Aquatics Supervisor Amy Jackson. "So there’s added resistance and you can do multiple upper body  and lower body things with it that you can’t do with a regular spin bike."

The classes will be held at the Gandy Pool in the mornings and evenings throughout the week.  Many in the pool's water aerobics class are excited about the new exercise program.

“I’m hoping it’ll tone up those knees, so I can walk a little better," said Carolyn Washell, of Lakeland.

According to Jackson, the bikes are great for those who want to lose weight.

“It’s a great cardiovascular workout. As well as if you have hip problems, knee problems, or anything like that, the water will allow you a little bit more freedom.”

Trainers from France will be at the pool July 30, to certify the aquatic spinning class instructors.
