The Polk County Sheriff's Office said a man has been charged after a school's athletic booster club card was used for nearly $10,000 of purchases that were personal.

Aaron Wilborn, 33, of Plant City was arrested on Tuesday.

He was charged with one count each of scheming to defraud and grand theft.

The investigation found that from 2014 to 2015, Wilborn used a Kathleen High School Athletic Booster Club's debit/credit card for $9,800 of personal expenditures.

"It's sloppy bookkeeping of children's hard earned money by an adult or a group of adults in that booster club," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "Period. That's what's it's about. But it's not unusual. We see it over and over and over."

Wilborn has since bonded out of jail.

Detectives said it is unclear when Wilborn began serving on the board as President, but prior to June 29, 2015, Wilborn was asked to step down from the board by the other board members, who suspected he was misusing the funds.

He has not been a board member since then. The board members contacted the Polk County School Board and asked them to conduct an audit. The school board then asked deputies to investigate.

Investigators said Wilborn used the booster club's card for 334 fuel, food, and personal transactions.

The sheriff's office said Wilborn admitted to using the card to pay bills, buy food and attend movies but said he thought he was owed the payments since he was using his personal car and using his phone for booster club activities.

In a statement, Polk County Public Schools told Bay News 9: "We appreciate the community's continued and generous support of our schools' athletic and academic programs. Any allegation that such support has been misused must be treated seriously.

"The Kathleen High School Athletic Booster Club is no longer operational. Coaches from all sports at Kathleen High (with the exception of the football program) used the booster club. However, the school no longer has an outside organization for these sports."
