An investigation is underway into a shooting at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Forbes Road in Plant City.

  • Incident stemmed from apparent road rage
  • Man killed served 10 year prison sentence in 2001 road rage incident
  • MLK Boulevard was closed during investigation

The man who was killed was identified by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office as 41-year-old Gary Durham.

Officials say the shooting stemmed from a road rage incident at the intersection between two drivers.

A nearby convenience store worker said she heard multiple shots.

“I heard four shots. I couldn't see anything. Then about 15 minutes later the cops came and blocked off the road,” said Kathi White.

According to investigators, the shooter tried to perform CPR on Durham, but he died at the scene.

"When we arrived he was performing CPR. He was trying to do the right thing,” said HCSO Colonel Donna.

MLK Boulevard was closed in both directions during the investigation but reopened at about 10:30 a.m.

Durham served a 10-year prison sentence for killing a Tampa man in a road rage incident in 2001.

We spoke today with the widow of Tim Gibbs, the 48-year-old father of three who witnesses say was “sucker-punched” and killed by Durham.

"I'm glad he is finally gone. He got what he deserved and the man who shot and killed him today shouldn't lose any sleep over it,” said Nancy Gibbs.

No charges have been filed against the 41-year-old Valrico man who killed Durham. Detectives are investigating whether it was a case of self-defense.

Detectives wouldn’t say if Durham had any type of a weapon on him.
