A car crash in St. Petersburg caused a power outage Friday, according to police.

  • Car struck power pole
  • Live power line fell onto the street
  • Woman was trapped inside the vehicle

The car hit a power pole at 40th Avenue South and MLK Street. It flipped, causing a live power line to fall onto the road and a palm tree to catch fire, police said.

The driver, James Algeo, was able to get out of the vehicle without injury.  The passenger has to be removed from the vehicle by fire rescue. She was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

An area of south St. Petersburg lost power for about an hour.

MLK Street was closed while power crews worked on the downed power line.

St. Petersburg police say charges are pending in the crash.
