A group of special needs students weren’t planning on going to Jefferson High School’s homecoming dance. But that changed when their classmate, Mary Jane Taylor, overheard them talking during lunch hour.

“One of them said ‘We never got asked to homecoming, and we always wanted to go,'” said Mary Jane.

Mary Jane and two of her friends decided to ask the classmates to homecoming -- and they said 'yes.'

“It’s our first time," said Bobby Keaton. "It’s going to be very stupendous."

“There will be some good food and sometimes I’ll do some dancing,” added Ariel Lazardo.

Local businesses donated tuxedos and last minute haircuts for the big event.

Mary Jane is also running for homecoming queen. Even if she wins, she said winning the crown won't be the most memorable part of her night.

“It’s a crown," she said. "Everyone is a queen and king in their own way. It doesn’t matter, seeing them happy is queen enough."

Mary Jane isn't the only one running for royalty.

Christian Garcia is wheelchair bound, but his dream is to walk across the football field at Friday night’s homecoming game.

Two star football players will hold him up and walk him across the field. The three practiced the walk today to make sure it goes off without a hitch.

“That’s what makes our school special," said Mary Jane. "Everyone here is family. We’re all equal and family, no matter the skin color you’re in or if you’re disabled. We’re all family."
