Clemmie Perry received the national honor for creating extra-curricular golfing opportunities for minority girls in the Bay area.

“It’s not really about golf, it’s about changing your life experiences,” Perry said.

Two years ago, Perry founded the non-profit Women of Color Golf and Girls on the Tee. Perry’s programs teach the fundamentals of golf. She said she came up with the idea after being laid off from her job.

“What I realized most is not many women or girls who were out on the golf course looked like myself and I took my severance package and I decided to try to make a change,” Perry said.

Perry is one of 10 people recognized as “Champions of Change” by the White House. On Friday, she was invited to Washington, DC for a panel discussion to brainstorm on ways to positively impact communities.

The “Champions of Change” initiative was created to feature people doing extraordinary things in their communities.
