A 24-year-old motorist traveling the wrong way on Interstate 4 struck a sedan head-on in Polk County on Saturday morning, killing a St. Petersburg man, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The eastbound lanes of I-4, near mile marker 33 in Lakeland, were shut down for almost three hours.

According to troopers, a 2005 Dodge Ram driven by Travis Coats, 24, of Polk City was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-4 when it collided head-on with a 2016 Ford Fusion driven by Demerrio Alistaire Tobler, 32. Tobler was killed.

A third vehicle struck Coats' truck after the first collision. Both Coats and the driver of the third vehicle, Emily Jean Smart, 23, of Lakeland were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

According to the FHP report, alcohol was a factor in the wrong-way collision.

Coats was arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage, DUI and driving in the wrong direction.
