Members from the group Food Not Bombs gathered in Gaslight Park Saturday to feed the homeless, less than a week after seven members of the group were arrested for doing exactly the same thing.

  • No arrests on Saturday
  • Group insists city ordinance does not apply to them
  • City Council to hold workshop on the matter next month

Things remained peaceful at the park today as dozens turned out to feed the homeless and support a simple message.

"Compassion," said Food Not Bombs contributor Dayna Lazarus. "Feeding the Homeless."

City leaders have said the group must have a permit to distribute food. Many members, however, believe they were targeted because the city didn't want to draw attention to the homeless during the College Football Playoff National Championship.

Furthermore, they believe the ordinance doesn't even apply to them.

"We're not a nonprofit, we don't have a checking account, we don't have an address," said one member of the group. "We're just people who get together and gather food that's otherwise going to be gotten rid of."

City council members have stated that they are willing to work with the group to come up with some sort of solution. They will host a workshop on the matter next month.

Until then, however, members of Food Not Bombs told us they'll continue their mission to make sure no one goes hungry.

"I think that the individuals in City Council are people just like us, and in their hearts they know that what we are doing is not a crime," said Lazarus.
