Dozens of state sanctioned and unsanctioned balls are held throughout Washington D.C. on inauguration night.

Many of the balls are specific to a state and thus the theme of the evening is reflected so.

Generally the main ball honors the birth state of the new president.

In the case of Trump, he and first lady Melania Trump, as well as and Vice President Mike Pence and wife Karen Pence, will make the rounds to three inaugural balls: "Freedom" and "Liberty" at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and the Armed Services Ball, which will take place at the National Building Museum.

At the Freedom Ball, the president said the day was great.

"People that weren't so nice to me were saying that we did a really good job today," he said.

He also thanked the crowd for their support, saying they were going to do big things.

Then at the Liberty Ball, Trump asked the crowd whether he should "keep the Twitter going?" The crowd roared in approval.

Trump said tweeting was a way to by pass the "dishonest media."

Meanwhile, Melania Trump was wearing an off-the-shoulder gown by Herve Pierre, a designer who has worked for Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta and other designers.

Pierre said he designed dresses for other first ladies while working in those great fashion houses, and now he is excited to design the dress for Melania Trump under his own name.

Pierre left Herrera's company last year.

The Trumps and the Pences visited the Armed Services Ball last. The ball included a talkback with military service members deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.
