A Tarpon Springs tech company made a donation aimed at giving families in need an opportunity to get back on their feet.

The Shepherd Center in Tarpon Springs usually collects items such as food, clothing, and furniture.

But Tek Prepper Solutions has instead donated the gift of technology. The center, a nonprofit that houses a pantry and thrift store and helps more than 70,000 people a year, was given five nearly new computers for its resource center.

"We're trying so very hard to help this community. This community is in such need. We have people who are homeless, homeless families," Executive Director Ada Del Gais said.

When James Greene, owner of Tek Prepper, heard about the Shepherd Center's mission, he said it hit close to home. So he didn't hesitate to help.

"My family definitely wasn't one of the rich families growing up. It was a little tough, a little struggle, and everything we've done has been a combination of me and my brothers and sisters working together," Greene said.

The donated computers will help clients who can't afford their own systems and provide internet so they can search for jobs, work toward their GED and find family.

"Anytime I get the chance to help out the place I've grown up, it's huge for me," Greene said.
