  • 'Now we can move on,' victim's mother says

"For Calvin, it's justice above justice," said Barnes' grandmother, Hazel Barnes.

In October 2010, Barnes was one of at least nine people killed in a gang ring in Manatee County.

This week, Calvin's grandmother and his mother, Deatrice, got the news that all six men involved in the gang ring were sentenced to at least one life term.

Nathaniel Harris, the one charged with kidnapping Barnes, was sentenced to four life sentences, plus 100 years.

"They can't bring Calvin back, but they won't come back either," Hazel Barnes said. "We don't have to worry about seeing their faces in Manatee county or no other county."

Barnes mother said one of Calvin's favorite pastimes was fishing in Bradenton.

Standing in one of his favorite spots, Barnes family released white balloons as a sign justice has been served.

"It's just a big relief that it's over with. Now we can move on with our life," Deatrice Barnes said.

During the hearing, one of the men involved in the gang ring apologized to the victim's family.

Deatrice Barnes said she has accepted that.
