  • Man dies after fleeing from a deputy, running into traffic
  • Matthew Lindley was hit by a vehicle on US 19
  • Lindley, who authorities say was impaired, was being taken into protective custody

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said Matthew Lindley died Thursday morning from his injuries after being struck by an SUV.

Authorities said a deputy was traveling down US 19, south of Tampa Road, when he noticed an SUV stopped in the roadway.

The deputy said a man exited the SUV and began walking along US 19.

The deputy made contact with the man, identified as Lindley, 29. He said Lindley had been drinking and was impaired to the extent that he was a danger to himself and others.

According to the report, the deputy tried to take Lindley into protective custody under a Marchman Act, but Lindley resisted and began to struggle with the deputy.

Lindley was able to break away from the deputy and ran into traffic on US 19.

A Ford Escape, driven by Malcon Suttie, 82, was traveling down the highway and was unable to avoid hitting Lindley, officials said.

Lindley was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where he later died.

Officials said Suttie showed no signs of impairment and speed was not a factor in the crash.

According to the report, Lindley has an active warrant for failure or appear, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a writ of bodily attachment for child support.

The sheriff's office is still investigating.
