St. Petersburg Police are investigating a shooting in a neighborhood near downtown involving three victims, at least one of whom has died.

  • Shooting occurred on 3800 block of 1st Ave. S.
  • Search for shooter or shooters still ongoing
  • Police say no immediate danger to the public

Officials said the shooting occurred on the 3800 block of 1st Avenue South. Officers responded to a call from the scene just before 3 p.m. and found three victims.

An area resident who only identified himself as "Michael" said he didn't hear gun shots, but he knew something wasn't right.

"We just got back from the bank bringing some groceries in and (there was) all of this commotion," Michael said.

Michael said that at first, he wasn't alarmed by the commotion, because there's usually so much going in the alley behind his home where the shooting happened.

"It sounded just like people being loud as typical in the alleyway," Michael said. "There's a lot of people walking through these alleyways. They're loud, they're obnoxious. I didn't actually think anyone was going to get hurt today."

Officers went door to door asking neighbors whether they had heard anything. Though their search continues for a shooter or shooters, police said that the public was not in any immediate danger.

The two surviving victims were hospitalized at Bayfront Health Hospital. One was critically injured and underwent surgery, while the other's injuries were not life-threatening.
