Authorities in Polk County are investigating a smash-and-grab burglary at a gun store.

It occurred Monday morning at the Rapture Guns and Knives store at 8216 US Hwy 98 North in Lakeland.

The culprits used a tool to dismantle the front door lock, entered the business and used a hammer to smash a glass case.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said "numerous firearms" were stolen and that the culprits fled the scene just before 1:35 a.m.

Investigators said the store's alarm was activated when the front door was opened but that several minutes passed before the notification from the alarm company was sent to law enforcement.

"Alarm systems alone are not adequate deterrents, or adequate security, at gun stores," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "We've reached out to all of the gun store owners in the county and discussed the importance of having robust security systems in place."

The same business was burglarized last month.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office.
