Transformation of the Kenwood neighborhood continues in St. Petersburg

  • Reimagined office building latest step in Kenwood renovations
  • Six-story structure at 401 34th St N changing into 78 loft style apartments
  • $80 million in the 10-acre project

The next phase of Kenwood improvements begins with developers unveiling renovation plans this week for an old office building.

The vacant, six-story structure at 3151 3rd Avenue North is being transformed into 78 loft-style apartments.

The groundbreaking is taking place Wednesday.

Residents in the area say they welcome the change, as long as the integrity of the neighborhood doesn't change.

"It's eclectic," said Kenwood resident Kevin Altieri of the historic district neighborhood. "It's a mix of lifestyles a mix of ages everybody is welcome.

"This whole area, you're starting to see a change, very slowly, but you're starting to see some healthy changes coming and new people are moving in and that's iliciting changes to the properties as well so I think it's good for all of us from a security standpoint as well as value."

Miami-based developer Altis Cardinal is investing $80 million in the 10-acre project. This is not the firm's first venture in the area.

The Altis group started with renovating the Skyline Fifth Apartment tower. The company also tore down the Mosley Motel as part of its redevloping the entire site.

Altis officials said the goal is to create a connected live, work, play area that the entire neighborhood can use and enjoy.
