St. Petersburg police are trying to locate a driver that struck a bicyclist and then drove off this weekend.

The crash happened Saturday evening just before 9 p.m. in the 4200 block of 1st Avenue North.

Police said Connor James Bolton, 23, was riding his bicycle eastbound on 1st Avenue North against the flow of traffic.

Police said he was struck head-on by a burgundy SUV.

Bolton came to a rest in the middle of 1st Avenue North. He was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in critical condition.

On Sunday night, police found the SUV on 16th Avenue after a tip from a witness.

The older model Chevy Tahoe, with its drivers side windshield caved in, was impounded.

Police will check the car for fingerprints and any other evidence today. They also will interview the person the Tahoe is registered to to try and find out who was driving the SUV Saturday night.

Police have not yet said if the SUV was reported stolen before the hit-and-run accident happened.

The driver could face charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injury. That can carry a prison sentence of up to five years.
