Many of the Bay area's Gold Star families were honored Sunday during a ceremony in Riverview.

  • Home Depot adds special parking signs in memory of veterans
  • Soldiers who died have names engraved on signs
  • The parking spots are reserved for veterans

Eight soldiers killed in the line of duty had their names engraved above special veteran memorial parking signs at Home Depot.

Those signs were presented to their families Sunday during a heartfelt ceremony.

Below each man's name was the branch of military which they served and a QR Code. When scanned, the code shows a photo of the soldier and their biography.

"It just fills our heart with so much joy to know we’ll never forget,” said Cheryl Sitton, who lost her son Staff Sgt. Matthew Sitton in 2012. “And they’ll never be forgotten."

The signs will be installed at Home Depot stores across the Bay area, in the parking lot of the store that is closest to that soldier's home.

Veterans will not only have a spot to park, but also a chance to learn about a soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"It’s been six years and people are still doing everything they can to honor and respect and remember his name, and it’ just a wonderful thing it’s very humbling," said Craig Gross, Cpl. Frank Robert Gross' father.

It’s a unique way to remember the young men who didn't get a chance to come home.
