A 27-year-old Hillsborough County woman was arrested and charged on child abuse charges.

Officials said Veronica Rivera-Cruz brought a 19-month-old girl to Brandon Regional Hospital on Oct. 2 for swelling of the child's left leg.

Doctors confirmed the child had suffered multiple injuries. Detectives determined the child had suffered physical abuse consistently for at least two months, based on the different stages of healing and acute injuries.

Officials said Rivera-Cruz failed to provide medical attention to the victim, letting the baby live day to day with numerous injuries to her body.

The child has since been transferred to All Children's Hospital in St. Pete.

Rivera-Cruz was arrested on Oct. 4 and charged with aggravated child abuse and child neglect with great bodily harm.
