Hillsborough County authorities said Thursday the father of a 13-year-old girl whose body was found this summer in a nature preserve has been charged.

The father, 37-year-old Nahshon Shannon, was charged with aggravated child abuse and first-degree felony murder. He was to be booked into jail with no bond, officials said.

The body of Janessa Shannon was found in mid-July in a wooded area of the Triple Creek Nature Preserve. She had been reported missing on July 2.

Col. Donna Lusczynski with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Thursday during a news conference:

"On July 1, Nahshon Shannon picked Janessa up from her mother’s residence in Bradenton due to some behavioral issues. We know Nahshon and Janessa came back to his residence in Riverview here in Hillsborough County. At some point Nahshon and Janessa got into an argument ultimately ending in the death of Janessa.”

Nahshon is accused of taking Janessa to the preserve in "an attempt to bury and hide the body," Col. Lusczynski added.

The girl's father told authorities in July that Janessa had run away before and was being punished for sneaking out of her mother's home.

Authorities said these charges mark the latest in a long history of violent crimes for Nahshon.

“(He) has been arrested and convicted of 11 felonies in the past and nine misdemeanors.  The felonies  included sexual assault, felony battery, burglaries,  violence, obtaining worthless property and then there is a number of misdemeanor traffic offenses,” Col. Lusczynski said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was criticized at the time for not issuing an Amber Alert, but the office said criteria including a suspect vehicle weren't met.

At Thursday's news conference, authorities wouldn't say if the father confessed, saying the investigation was still under way.

Nahshon will be arraigned on his charges Friday.
