The crash happened at about 5 p.m. in the westbound lanes of State Road 60, in front of a Motel 6.

Deputies say James Chavez, 28, was driving an SUV along SR-60, when he crossed into the path a motorcycle driven by 56-year-old Michael Dewey.

The motorcycle struck the SUV. Dewey was critically injured, investigators said. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Chavez was not injured in the crash. He faces multiple charges, including driving on a suspended driver’s license with knowledge and failing to yield to the right of way of the motorcyclist.

The owner of the SUV, Amy Rumball, was also charged with allowing someone she knew was an unlicensed driver to drive her vehicle.

Initially investigators reported that Rumball was driving the SUV. After conducting additional interviews, they learned the driver was Chavez.

The crash remains under investigation.
