Hillsborough County deputies rescued an 82-year-old woman from her car moments before it completely submerged under water.

Deputies responded to a single vehicle crash at Alexander Road North and Paul Buchman Highway around 5 p.m. on Nov. 11.

While enroute, the dispatcher informed the deputies that a vehicle had entered the pond and the driver was still inside. When they arrived they immediately got into the water and began removing the driver, Leona Evans. They were able to get her out of the vehicle just before it completely submerged. 

Evans was transported to Lakeland Regional Hospital as a trauma alert and is listed in serious condition. 

One of the deputies also suffered several lacerations to his face and arms from a window which had to be broken to remove Evans. 

The crash remains under investigation.
