Police are investigating an overnight homicide at an east Tampa restaurant.

  • Shots fired at 2 a.m. at Island Grill restaurant and nightclub

According to officers, shots were fired around 2 a.m. at the Island Grill restaurant and nightclub at 3404 East Lake Avenue. 

Police said an altercation broke out during a large party at the club involving numerous people. The fight escalated and shots were fired. When police arrived, they found one man dead at the scene. The identity of the person killed has not been released.

"Officers arrived on scene to find dozens of subjects in the club, leaving the club, trying to run out of the club," said Tampa Police Lt. Ricardo Ubinas. "They (officers) found one subject on the floor deceased (with a) gun shot wound."

Investigators are trying to determine what happened in the frantic moments leading up to the shooting. They also are trying to determine if the man was shot outside and then ran into the club or if shots were fired inside and outside. 

So far, police have only found shell casings outside the club. 

Multiple people were interviewed at the scene and investigators said there is one person of interest that has been questioned in the shooting. Also, another witness was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital.
