On Monday, Nov. 27, 2017 at exactly 3:15 p.m. nearly 60 teachers and staff walked out of Leto High School together.

  • Teachers fighting for raises promised by district
  • About 4,000 teachers were supposed to get raises
  • Administrators claim there's not enough money

These teachers said they are "working the contract" this week. That means not staying late. not coming in early, and not taking work home.

It's their way to fight for the pay raises they said they were promised by the district.

"Teachers get pushed to the back of the line, and we are tired of it," Teacher Simo Prill said.

According to the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association, about 4,000 teachers were supposed to get raises this year. The district took the raises off the table shortly after school started, with administrators saying there was not enough money.

"Our teachers in Hillsborough County on average are paid higher than all of our contiguous counties," said Hillsborough School Superintendent Jeff Eakins. "Now, that doesn't mean that we should not do more -- we want to do more when dollars allow us to do more,"

Meanwhile, teachers are continuing to show their frustration. They said they will strictly follow the contract all week, in the hope the demonstration sparks a change of heart by the district.
