It's an event that attracts thousands, but instead of leaving this year's Dunedin Christmas parade full of cheer, Keith Fogarty fears one spectator may have lost something valuable.

"We absolutely want to find the true owner and make their Christmas," Fogarty said.

Fogarty said after last week's parade, he sent street sweepers out to clean up debris. Among the piles and piles of leaves and trash, something shiny caught his eye.

"Out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a piece of glass, something glistening in the sun," Fogarty said.

That piece of glass turned out to be a ring. Fogarty cleaned it and immediately started searching for its owner.

He thinks it may have fallen off the person's hand during the parade. He said whether it is costume jewelry or the real deal, he hopes it can go home for the holidays.

"To me, value has so many different meanings whether it's by price or something that was just passed down," Fogarty said.
