It’s been four days since a fire ripped through the Brookshire Townhomes in Tampa, destroying residents’ homes right before the holidays.

The motel vouchers are starting to run out, and some of the victims said they’re going to be homeless soon if they don’t get some help.

The fire caught resident Johao Rios, 33, completely off guard.

“Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I was unemployed, so we didn’t have anything to fall back on,” said Rios.

Rios lived in the townhome with his father, a cancer survivor. He went on to say he just started working at a new job, and doesn’t have any time off to either look for a new place or to seek help from the different agencies the Red Cross suggested.

“Awesome guy! I love him to death," Rios said, speaking about his father. "I want security for him again. He’s on social security, fixed income and his income doesn’t help too much."

Rios was at work when the fire broke out. He came home to learn he’d lost almost everything.

“It was a very surreal experience,” said Rios. “You don’t think things like that happen until you see it. You don’t think it’ll touch you that close, so it hurt a lot.”

Help has been trickling in. His employer, JCPenney,  helped he and his father out with clothing.

“They’ve been generous,” Rios said. “They’ve given me a few gift cards for me and my father to come shopping with.”

His main concern is finding the money to pay for a deposit and first and last month's rent on a new place. The family did not have renter’s insurance.

Rios has started an online fundraising campaign to help with their living costs. For more information or to help with a donation, visit gofundme.com/new-home-after-total-fire-loss.
