A fire left a Bay area animal shelter in need of help.

  • Half the building without power
  • Animal shelter in need of funds

A space heater caused a fire at the Humane Society of Pasco County. It badly damaged an already aging building, and the group doesn't have the cash to fix it.

The fire badly damged electrical wires that were already in bad shape and now half the building doesn't have power.

"It's getting difficult to keep the animals comfortable. We do the best we can, but it's getting harder and harder to do that," Christine Depaolo, a volunteer at the humane society, said.

The building has needed some repairs for some time, however, the recent fire is now making fixing the building a much bigger priority.

"It cannot be repaired because it is so old that no electrician will touch it to repair it. It cannot be repaired at this point," Depaolo said.

The best solution is to eventually start to build a new trailer. However, the only income they have is from community donations--nothing from the state or county.

"That is the only funding that we get. And when we don't get those, we have to use our own funding from our pockets," she said.

The humane society has been in the same place for more than 30 years and is now raising money online to get a new place built. They want it simple, but safe.

"What we're looking for is a safe, clean healthy environment for both our volunteers as well as our animals," Depaolo said.
