For nearly 40 years, Hillsborough County Deputies and volunteers in the Ruskin area have been delivering gifts to families facing hardships.

The group calls themselves “Deputies Darlins.”

On Friday, the deputies and volunteers wrapped thousands of toys, preparing them to be delivered. They ranged from dolls, to books, to scooters to even a virtual reality headset.

“This year… we have over 70 kids.  We have 25 families we’re dealing with. We’re going to make them have a Christmas that otherwise they wouldn’t. It’s a chance for deputies and the community to give back,” said Maj. Rob Bullara, Commander of Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s District 4.

Many of the children receiving the gifts were involved in tragedies the department investigated such as traffic accidents, house fires and homicides.

“We had an accident where they lost a parent and now those three children and three other children in that family are living with the grandmother,” said Deputy Bobby Howard. “If we didn’t deliver these gifts, the children get nothing.”

Retired Community Service Officer Donna Budd started the group back in 1981.

“I know what’s it’s like not to have food for my kids,” said Donna Budd. “It’s brought me some joy, a lot happiness just to see the expression.”

She said the expressions on the children’s face are priceless once they realize the deputies are visiting their home for a good reason. She remembers the ones who tell her they’re grateful.

“I’ve saved every card. They’re just special,” said Donna Budd, through tears.

This year, 40 local businesses and donors helped make the toy giveaway possible.

“The biggest sponsor was a couple who came to us and bought 23 bicycles for children at the Walmart locally. They want no recognition. They just wanted to give,” said Major Bullara.
