For the third time in recent weeks, a major power company has said it wants to add a storm recovery fee to its monthly bills to customers.

Tampa Electric on Thursday filed with the Florida Public Service Commission to seek recovery of costs to restore power after Hurricane Irma and several previous storms that include tropical storms Erika and Colin, and hurricanes Hermine and Matthew.

The company is seeking about $88 million. For the average customer, who uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kwh) a month, that would add $4 to their monthly bill.

The charge would take effect in March and continue throughout 2018, when it would likely be reduced, according to a news release by TECO.

The company said it would cover storm expenses for the past three years and replenish the storm reserve for future events.

The PSC and consumer groups are expected to review and discuss the costs in early 2018.

Duke Energy has also said it will file with the PSC to add about $5 monthly to bills.

Florida Power and Light is also seeking a $4 monthly surcharge to recoup costs from Hurricane Irma. The company announced its intent in October.
