Coming soon to downtown Tampa: A new luxury hotel under the Marriott flag.

Strategic Property Partners, the developers behind Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik's Water Street Tampa, announced Friday a 26-story JW Marriott will be built in downtown Tampa.

The hotel will be located at 10 Water Street, across from the Marriott Waterside. The hotel will be the first JW Marriott in Tampa.

The hotel will have 519 rooms, a rooftop bar and expanded meeting space. SPP also is investing $40 million in renovations into the Waterside hotel and marina.

Construction on the new hotel is slated to begin early next year.

The hotel is part of the Water Street Tampa project that will reshape downtown Tampa in the coming years. The $3 billion project will be a business-residential-retail development spread across 53 acres.

When completed, the mixed-use project will spread 9 million square feet of new buildings across the Channelside section of downtown during the next decade.

The reconfiguring of the street grid has already started, along with construction on one of the project's flagship addition, the new University of South Florida medical school.

The district eventually will include 3,500 new rental and for-sale residences, along with retail and restaurant space.
