A Brooksville couple exchanged wedding vows at register number four on Friday, inside the Publix where they first met.

  • Couple married exactly one year after first date
  • Bride a cashier at the location, groom a frequent customer
  • Reception held in employee's break room

“This is where the romance kind of evolved over time,” said the groom, Mike Gonzalez, 67. “I figure it would be the only appropriate thing to do.”

The bride, Cynthia Smith, 61, has worked as a cashier at Publix for 10 years. Smith said it took her awhile to notice that Mike was often coming through her line at register number four.

“He never knew which days I would be working and he would come in and buy like two or three things,” she said. “It took me awhile to notice this guy was always remembering what I talked about last time. He won me over. I wasn’t looking for this.”

Gonzalez, who had been a widower for about a year and a half before meeting Cynthia, said it took about six months to get her to agree to a date. Exactly one year after that first date, the couple were tying the knot.

A Publix manager officiated the wedding as other shoppers were checking out.

“First of all, I want to thank you for coming in my line,” Cynthia vowed. “I want to thank you for my holding my hand.”

“I will love and cherish you for the rest of my life,” Mike vowed. “I’m just as happy as I could possibly be at this moment.”

The couple paid for their wedding cake and held a reception in the employee break room.

“He’s a wonderful man,” Cynthia said. “I couldn’t be happier.”
