  • Johnson had an active warrant for unlawful sex with a minor
  • Previous arrest history included possession of meth, cocaine, sale of narcotics

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon on Sunset Circle in Lake Alfred. The suspect, identified as Kevin Johnson, 28, was the only person in the house. No deputies were injured in the exchange of gunfire.

Officials said at 5:50 p.m. SWAT team members blew a small hole in the side of the house in order to gain visibility of the subject. Shortly after, the suspect was removed from the house deceased.

No cause of death for Johnson has been released. Officials said an autopsy would be performed on Thursday, Feb. 23.

Johnson had an active Polk County warrant for Unlawful Sex with a Minor. His previous arrest history included charges ranging from possession of meth and cocaine to giving false information to a pawn broker and resisting arrest.

The residence where Johnson barricaded himself from police, located at 45 Sunset Circle, was owned by his parents. On prior occasions, undercover narcotics investigators had purchased drugs at the residence, which was the probable cause for Wednesday's search warrant and investigation.

Johnson's mother was arrested at the scene after refusing to cooperate with deputies. She threw down a cell phone when deputies asked to look at it for evidentiary purposes. She was subsequently charged with tampering with evidence.
