Hernando County deputies arrested a man Saturday after he reportedly threatened to kill other drivers and deputies while pointing a shotgun at them.

  • Adam Goodman, 35, facing assault, battery charges
  • Goodman reportedly told deputies "I'll kill you and your families."
  • Witnesses say incident began while Goodman was sitting in traffic

According to a news release, deputies responded to a possible road rage incident Saturday near Mariner Boulevard and Spring Hill Drive at around 1:30 p.m. The suspect, later identified as Adam Goodman, 35, of Raleigh, NC, was driving a white Chrysler 300 and pointing a .12 gauge shotgun at other drivers, threatening to kill them.

Deputies said at first Goodman refused to stop for deputies on scene, and continued westbound on Spring Hill Drive. When Goodman finally did stop, he refused to exit the vehicle.

When deputies arrived at the driver's side of Goodman's car, they saw the shotgun pointing out the window while in Goodman's lap. Goodman reportedly told both deputies, "I'll kill you and your families," then continued to flee westbound.

Deputies then attempted to stop him by deploying stop sticks in his path at the intersection of Spring Hill Drive and Deltona Boulevard. As he approached the intersection, Goodman swerved right at the deputy deploying the stop sticks, forcing him to jump out of the way.

Goodman then ran over the stop sticks, which damaged all four of his tires. Goodman was able to continue west until he reached Port Court, at which time the car was no longer operable.

At that point, deputies again directed Goodman to exit the car. This time, he complied, and was taken into custody without further incident.

Due to his aggressive behavior, deputies first transported Goodman to Bayfront Health Spring Hill. Once he was medically cleared, he was charged and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center.

One of the victims told detectives that the incident started near the YMCA location on Mariner Boulevard while Goodman and several other drivers were sitting in traffic. According to the victim, Goodman began screaming obscenities at the other drivers, pointing his weapon at them, and threatening to kill them.

Goodman told detectives that he believed the federal government was following him, and he needed the shotgun for protection. He denied any use of narcotics. However, a small amount of marijuana was located inside his car, along with the shotgun.

Goodman now faces the following charges

  • Assault on a law enforcement officer (3 counts)
  • Aggravated assault (3 counts)
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Battery on a law enforcement officer
  • Attempting to flee/elude a law enforcement officer
  • Resisting arrest without violence

His bond was set at $54,000.
