  • Fire sparked in duplex; caused smoke, water damage to adjacent duplex
  • No one injured in the fire

Polk County Fire Rescue said the fire started around 1:15 a.m. in the kitchen of one of the homes at 1525 Moonlite Drive.

Crews said there was heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the house.

Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire before it spread.

They said the side of the duplex where the fire originated sustained heavy damage. There was also smoke and water damage throughout the home.

Fire crews said the fire didn't spread to the adjacent duplex, but it did sustain smoke and water damage.

Utilities in both units had to be turned off due to the fire.

Crews said the fire appears to be accidental. A 40-year-old grandmother and her 6-month-old grandson lived in the home where the fire sparked.

She told firefighters that she cooked some food around midnight and then went to bed.

They said the fire started on or around the stove area.

A 48-year-old mother and her 11-year-son lived in the duplex next door.

Crews said no one was injured in the fire.
