During the "Polk Hacks" three-day event at Polk State College's Lakeland campus Apr. 21-23, teens will team up with local businesses to create apps and other technology applications to tackle real world problems.

Representatives from participating local business would act as mentors, helping participating students come up with business plans as well as creating products and solutions.

The organizers of "Polk Hacks" are International Baccalaureate students at Bartow High School. The group is working hard every day at school to get the word out about "Polk Hacks" and get it organized.

“My goal for the event is to help improve the quality of our technology education," said event chairperson Grady Daniels. "I've gone through my high school technology education programs. I really had trouble learning and getting prepared for the kind of careers that I'm interested in.”

Daniels said the event is currently seeking more teens to sign up, as well as more technology professionals to serve as mentors. They've already received $5,000 from Ford to help fund the event.
