The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate a fatal multi-vehicle crash in Tampa Friday morning.

  • Jose E. Mastrapa, 28, killed in crash
  • Alcohol suspected a factor
  • Charges pending

Investigators said at 6:14 a.m., Derrick Upshur, 33, was driving south on Himes Avenue in his 2004 Ford F-150 when he ran a red light at the intersection with W. Waters Avenue. Upshur was speeding at the time he ran the light.

Upshur then collided with Jose E. Mastrapa, 28, who was driving eastbound on Himes. The impact sent Mastrapa's 1999 Ford Mustang out of the intersection and into a utility pole.

Upshur's truck, meanwhile, went on to collide with another vehicle in the intersection.

Mastrapa sustained critical injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Upshur and the driver of the other vehicle he struck, Bahram Sarabi, 42, were transported to St. Joseph's Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Investigators suspect alcohol may have played a part in the crash. Charges are pending.

Parts of Waters Ave. and Himes Ave. were closed for several hours as deputies investigated.

The roads opened back up around 1:30 p.m.
